In June 2007, one of the most controversial series finals of the history of television has been broadcasted. The final cut leads into a black screen with an open ending. Tony Sopranos fate was written in the stars. Until this day, it was as far as possible in the hands of the audiences interpretation what happened to the Mafia Boss, embodied by James Gandolfini (*1961- † 2013) whose story was pursuing millions of viewers in six seasons since 1999.

The Vox, writer Martha P. Nochimson recently had an interview with the Director and writer David Chase and was able to receive THE to be long estimated answer to the biggest Questionnaire in TV Show History:

Is Tony Soprano dead or not ? Today the world found out.

The approximately 4 minutes final sequence is underlined with the song “Don´t Stop Believin” ‘by Journey in the background. Meanwhile it is shown how Tony´s daughter Meadow has problems when entering a parking space. Several cuts and rising tension later, unknown men enter gradually the place and the suspensive screenplay imparts a menace atmosphere. “Do not Stop Believin” plays, even as an analytical argument – a crucial role in this scene. The one simple message of the lyrics is “Do not listen to dream on”, “And some will win, some will lose.” But also mentioning the unknown, the “Strangers”, looking in the night and hide. For someone who was following the Sopranos intensively for years and being therefore sometimes still puzzled about the characters fate and intensions, it is a big deal for me to find out about David Chase´s decision. I mean sometimes I still think about the poor Adriana, but this is a different story and shall be told when time is come.

Today David Chase answered the question of curiosity regarding Tonys final fate, to the VOX writer, who diplomatically asked for granted, as maybe thousands of journalists already did before.

The answer was simply: “NO. NO HE ISN´T.”

No further comment.

James Gandolfini portrayed the urban character of Soprano in an incomparable way which was intensively outstanding and therefore will always be remembered after his tragical early dead in 2013.

Maybe this answer was Chases´ memoriam for Gandolfini? We´ll never find out anyway.
